this week's work

This week, we only had two classes; Tuesday & Wednesday.
  • On Tuesday we covered topics in 7.3 - Derivatives of Other Trigonometric Functions. We looked at examples similar to Examples 3-5 (p. 317-318).
  • On Wednesday we started looking at section 7.4 - Applications. We looked at a velocity question (similar to Example 1 on p. 321) and a related rates question (similar to Example 3 on p. 323).

Upcoming Test

You may or may not have read this on the course calendar, but the test for Unit 2 is scheduled for Monday, March 17th. Today we looked at section 2.7 - Implicit Differentiation. Only one more topic to cover and we're done Unit 2!

Quiz on Derivatives

The quiz has been moved to tomorrow, Tuesday, March 11th. The quiz will cover finding derivatives using rules up until the Power and Chain Rule. Please reference p. 102 in your text for a summarized list of rules.
Today in class we covered using various rules to find the derivative of one particular function - we went over p. 103 #6 a-f.

Upcoming Test

There will be a test on Wednesday Feb. 13th, on Chapter 1 (everything we've covered including today's class). Extra help will be available tomorrow (Tuesday) from 12:30 - 1:00 pm.

In class we covered section 1.7 on Infinite Series.

Today in Class...

Today we went over yesterday's quiz.

We also started looking at infinite sequences (section 1.6); this is a bit of a review from last semester.

Assignment #1 is due tomorrow, Feb. 8th! 10% per day is the penalty for handing it in late.

I've you've checked the calendar, you'll notice that your first test is on Wednesday, February 13th.

Assignment # 1 update!

The last question in assignment 1 was p. 51 # 5 - instead of this I would like you to do p. 50# 3a-h.

Today we started section 1.5 - talking about velocity & finding instantaneous velocity using the equation for the slope of the tangent line (that we saw yesterday).

Extra Help Canceled

Today extra help was canceled due to weather, so I will be offering extra help on Thursday, February 7th from 3:40 - 4:10 pm.

In class we talked about when a function is discontinuous (end of section 1.3) and we also looked at two different formulas to use to calculate the slope of the tangent line of a function at a certain point (section 1.4).

one-sided limits

Today we finished up section 1.2 by looking at functions that are continuous for all x-values, what to do if they are not. We also looked at section 1.3 (One-Sided Limits) and talked about evaluating the limit of a function 'from the left,' and 'from the right.' Sometimes they are equal to each other, and sometimes they are not (when they're not, we say the limit does not exist).

Quiz on Wednesday, Feb. 6th! 2-3 questions on topics we've been discussing in class.

Material Covered

Today in class we started section 1.2 The Limit of a Function - we covered up until p. 15 where it talks about functions being 'continuous at a.'
